How Much Fuel Does a Plane Use? (The Numbers Are Wild)

How much fuel does a plane use? Start with this: a Boeing 747 burns roughly a gallon of fuel every second it’s in the air. Not per mile. Per second. By the time you’ve read this sentence out loud, a 747 somewhere has gone through two gallons.

Scale that across a whole flight and the numbers stop sounding real. A widebody crossing an ocean can burn through 60 or 70 tonnes of fuel before it lands, more than the weight of the plane itself once you strip the fuel back out. And yet, spread that same fuel across everyone onboard, and flying turns out to be one of the more efficient ways humans move around the planet. Here’s how both of those things are true at once.

The raw numbers: per second, per hour, per flight

A 747 at cruise burns somewhere around 10 to 11 tonnes of fuel an hour, which works out to roughly 3,600 gallons an hour, or about a gallon a second. That’s not a one-off estimate, it’s the number pilots and engineers who fly the jumbo actually use. Four engines, each one drinking fuel fast enough that the whole aircraft could fill a decent-sized backyard swimming pool in well under an hour.

Stretch that over a long-haul crossing and the total climbs into genuinely large territory. A widebody flying London to New York and back has burned upward of 70 tonnes of fuel on a single leg, real numbers airlines have reported from actual transatlantic flights. That’s not a constant rate the whole way, either. Takeoff and the climb out are the thirstiest phase of the whole flight: the engines are running near maximum thrust to haul a fully loaded jet up to cruising altitude, burning fuel faster per minute than at any other point. Once the plane levels off, fuel flow drops off noticeably, which is a big part of why airlines fight so hard to cruise as high as the aircraft allows: thinner air up there means less drag, and less drag means the engines can throttle back and still hold speed.

Not every jet drinks the same

Here’s where the numbers swing hard, because “a plane” covers everything from a jumbo to a puddle-jumper, and fuel burn tracks size closely.

A jumbo burns roughly four times what a single-aisle A320 or 737 does, hour for hour. That’s not really a surprise once you picture the size difference, four engines instead of two, a fuselage wide enough for two aisles, enough fuel capacity to cross an ocean without stopping. Modern twin-engine widebodies like the 787 and A350 split the difference: built for exactly the same long-haul missions the 747 used to fly, but with newer engines and lighter airframes that cut the burn by nearly half. It’s a big reason ultra-long-haul routes only became viable in the last decade or so: the fuel math finally closed.

One more detail worth knowing: none of this gets measured in gallons on the operational side. Airlines fuel and track everything by weight, kilograms or tonnes, not volume, because jet fuel expands and contracts with temperature and a gallon of cold fuel weighs more than a gallon of warm fuel. Weight is what actually matters for takeoff performance and landing limits, so weight is what gets written on the paperwork.

The twist: it’s actually efficient per person

Here’s the part that flips the whole story. Take that same 747 burning a gallon a second and divide it by the 400-plus people sitting in the cabin, and the picture changes completely.

A modern airliner flying reasonably full works out to somewhere around 40 to 50-plus passenger-miles per gallon, depending on the aircraft and load factor. Put a number you know next to that: an efficient car getting 30 to 40 mpg with one person in it is, per person, actually burning more fuel over the same distance than a full airliner is. Fill that car with four people and it pulls ahead again, but a single-occupant car, which is most cars on most trips, loses to a full plane. The thirstiest machine most of us will ever step onto turns out to be one of the more fuel-efficient ways to move a human being a long distance, as long as the seats are full.

That “as long as the seats are full” part is doing real work. A half-empty plane loses the advantage fast, since the fuel burn barely changes whether the cabin is packed or half empty, the fuel is mostly paying to move the aircraft itself, not the passengers. That’s the whole logic behind why airlines chase full flights so aggressively: an empty seat is dead weight on the efficiency math, not just the revenue math.

The strange truth about that fuel bill

So there it is: a machine that can burn through a small swimming pool of fuel in under an hour, and still beat a lot of cars on a per-person basis. Both numbers are true, they’re just answering different questions. One is about the size of the tank. The other is about what happens when you divide that tank by everyone sitting around you. Next time you’re strapped in and the engines spool up for takeoff, that whine outside the window is a few hundred gallons an hour, working out, oddly, to one of the more efficient trips per person you’re likely to take all year.
