Next time a plane crosses overhead, look near the tail. Painted right there, small and easy to miss, is a string of letters and numbers that answers a question you’ve probably wondered a hundred times: where is that thing actually from? Aircraft registration codes by country work exactly like a license plate does for a car, and once you know the trick, you can read a plane’s home nation off the fuselage before it’s even out of sight.

It’s one of those bits of aviation that hides in plain sight. Every airliner, every private jet, every little Cessna at a grass strip carries one. Learn the pattern once and you’ll never look at a plane the same way again. Reading the tail tells you where a plane is from; telling the aircraft types apart from the ground tells you what it is.

What a registration actually is

That code is called the registration. Most people call it the tail number, because on most aircraft that’s exactly where it lives, painted along the vertical fin or the rear fuselage in tall block letters. It uniquely identifies one specific airframe, the same way a VIN identifies one specific car, for the entire life of that aircraft.

Here’s the mix-up worth clearing up, because it trips up almost everyone. The registration is not the flight number, and it’s not the callsign either. The flight number is the route label, something like BA286, and it changes depending on where the plane is flying that day. The callsign is what the pilot says on the radio and what air traffic control uses to talk to them, often the airline’s radio name plus a number: British Airways flights answer to “Speedbird”, so BA286 might be spoken as “Speedbird 286.” Neither of those follows the aircraft home at night. The registration does. It’s welded to that one airframe from delivery to retirement, regardless of which route it’s flying or what the crew is calling it on the radio.

How the country prefix works

Here’s the part that turns the code into a superpower: the first character or two of every registration tells you the country the aircraft is registered in. This isn’t a coincidence or an airline habit, it’s international law. Under a treaty called the Chicago Convention, every country gets assigned its own nationality prefix, one of ICAO’s nationality marks drawn from the radio call sign letters the ITU handed it, and every aircraft registered there has to start with it.

Some of these have their own personality. EI shows up constantly because Ireland is a hub for aircraft leasing, so a huge slice of the world’s airliners are registered there even if they’ve never flown anywhere near Dublin. And a few prefixes get shared across territories with their own follow-on patterns, like B, which covers mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, each with a different format after the letter. The formats that look different

Not every country writes it the same way, and two in particular throw people off.

The United States doesn’t use a dash. A US registration is just N followed by up to five characters, like N12345, all run together. Nearly every other country separates the prefix from the rest with a hyphen, like G-EUPT or F-GKXA, so the no-dash American style can look like a typo the first time you notice it. It isn’t. That’s just how the FAA has always done it.

Japan is the other one worth knowing, because its registrations start with JA rather than a single letter, something like JA738A. It’s a two-letter prefix doing the same job a single letter does everywhere else, just Japan’s particular slice of the alphabet.

Read the tail, call the country

That’s really the whole trick. Next time you’re at a gate, or craning your neck at a plane crossing the sky the way you’d spot a 747 by its hump, find the registration near the tail, read the first letter or two, and you can name the country before anyone standing next to you has a clue what you’re looking at. It’s a small piece of code that turns a random plane overhead into a specific airplane, from a specific country, with a story of its own.

Is the registration the same as the flight number or callsign? No. The registration is permanently tied to one physical airframe. The flight number labels a route and changes flight to flight, and the callsign is what’s spoken on the radio, usually the airline’s radio name plus a number. All three can point at the same plane on a given day, but only the registration stays with it for life.

Does a plane’s registration ever change? Yes. If an aircraft is sold or moved onto another country’s registry, it gets re-registered with that country’s prefix and loses its old one. An airliner can carry two or three different registrations over a long career as it changes hands between airlines and leasing companies in different countries.

What do plane tail numbers mean? The tail number, more properly the registration, is a unique ID for that individual aircraft. The first letter or letters identify its country of registration under the international system set out in ICAO Annex 7; the rest of the code is specific to that one airframe.

How do I read an aircraft registration on a moving plane? Look near the tail or rear fuselage, where it’s painted in large letters. Binoculars or a zoom lens help at a distance, but on the ground at a gate or a fence line, most registrations are readable with the naked eye.
